Technical Requirements

The Official National Mah Jongg League Online Game is played through an Internet browser. Each browser is implemented in a slightly different way, so features in one browser may not be available in another browser. To make your game as enjoyable as possible, the best browser to use is Firefox. The features available in the Firefox browser are the best suited for this game. You must have Firefox installed on your computer or tablet to play the Official National Mah Jongg League Online Game.

Firefox

To play this game you must have the most current version of the Firefox browser. To get the Firefox browser, please do the following:

1) Download the browser from: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/
2) Locate the downloaded installation file
3) Install the browser on your computer/tablet

Firefox on Andriod

Get the Firefox browser from the google app store.

Firefox on the IPAD

Get the Firefox browser from the IPAD app store. NOTE: Apple seems to have more problems with the game and there is no support for Apple products. Use at your own risk.
If you wish to start over, clear the cookies and then start the game again from the play page.


Getting Started

Click on the Play page on this web site. The play page is the 3rd button at the top of this page and will have a place to start the online game.
Enter your NMJL Membership ID, Account Number and Access code if needed. Then select if you wish to start in the room or the tutorial.

There is a "room" where all of the online activities begin. The following are the main features of the room area.

Start Table

To play a game you can start your own table or join a table someone else started. To start your own table, click the "Start Table" button located in the lower right of the room screen. Then select the options you want (described below).

Table Options

The following options are available when you start a table:
Once you have selected your table options, you can click one of three buttons:

Join a Table

Players can create a table with the options they desire (see Start Table for starting your own table). The options are displayed at the top of the table with a line drawn through an option if that option was not desired. Below the table options, all of the available seats for that table are displayed. You can join that table by clicking one of the available seats.

Leave a Table

If you have a joined a table and wish to leave that table (before a game has started), you can click your name at the table and it will be removed from that table. If you started the table yourself, you can click the "Cancel Table" button in the lower right of the screen.

Starting a Game

Practice games, also know as "Bot Games", can be started by clicking the "Practice" button during the "Start Table" process. For a multi-player game, the player who started the table must also start the game. A game can be started with bots filling in for human players at any time by clicking the "Start with Bots" button in the lower right side of the screen. (Note: only the player who started the table will see the buttons for starting the game). Otherwise, once all 4 seats are filled, the player who started the table can click the "Start Game" button to start the game.

Bot Games

Also known as a "Practice Game", a Bot Game is played with one or more computer players or "bots" (short for robots). Bot games are not scored and are not displayed in the "Top 10 Scores" list.

Chat Area

There is a section at the bottom of the room called the "Chat Area" where players can communicate with one another. Everyone in the room can see messages in the Chat Area. To send a chat message, place your cursor in the area at the bottom of the chat area. After you type your message, press the "Enter" key on you keyboard and the message will appear in the chat area.

Net

The "Net" display in the upper left corner of the room is a measurement of the time (in seconds) that it takes the game server to communicate with your computer. This is a relative indicator of the speed of your Internet connection and not the speed of the game server. If the "Net" display is red, you may have lost your connection and you must refresh your screen by clicking the refresh button on your browser or by pressing the "F5" button on your computer to reconnect. (Note: The refresh button on your browser should look like an arrow curving into a circle)

Instructions for Online Play

Once a table has been established, a game can be started. All of the activities involved in playing a game are described below.

Starting

Practice games, also know as "Bot Games", can be started by clicking the "Practice" button during the "Start Table" process. For a multi-player game, the player who started the table must also start the game. A game can be started with bots filling in for human players at any time by clicking the "Start with Bots" button in the lower right side of the screen. (Note: only the player who started the table will see the buttons for starting the game). Otherwise, once all 4 seats are filled, the player who started the table can click the "Start Game" button to start the game.

Tile Arrangement

Drag and drop to arrange tiles in the concealed area only. Each time a tile is dropped the tiles will adjust themselves to form singles, pairs, pungs, kongs, quints and sextets. This is done from left to right. One can not arrange tiles while passing a tile. As new tiles are added they are placed on the right end of the concealed hand and may need to be arranged. If you wish to end doing the manual arragment, click on the END button on the right side of the concealed area.

Charlestons

How "Auto Pass" Works: The "Auto Pass" option in the Table Options determines whether Charleston tiles are passed automatically or not. If Auto Pass is "Yes", your tiles will be passed immediately after you select the last tile to pass. If Auto Pass is "No", you must click the "Pass Done" button once you have selected the tiles you want to pass. You can click a tile you have passed to retrieve it back into your hand, but only until the pass has been completed either by clicking the last tile to be passed or by clicking the "Pass Done" button.

Second Charleston: Players have the option to do a second Charleston after the first Charleston is complete. A "2nd Pass?" button will appear with "No". If any of the players click this button, the Second Charleston is not performed.

Optional Pass: For the Optional Pass round, 4 buttons will appear: "None", "1 Tile", "2 Tiles", and "3 Tiles". The lowest number of tiles selected by you and the opposite player is the number of tiles that must be passed during the Optional Pass round.

Blind Pass: When a blind pass situation occurs, you will see the three tiles passed to you above your concealed hand with the words "Blind Pass" on them instead of the tile face. You may click any or all of these tiles to pass without seeing their faces.

When Another Player Discards

When another player discards a tile, there will be three buttons for the actions possible: "Call for Exposure", "Don't Take", and "Call for Mah Jongg".

Call for Exposure: If a valid exposure is not available, you will not be able to click this button. If a valid exposure can be made, you may click this button. If only a pung can be made, the exposure will be completed automatically. Otherwise, you will be presented with the possible exposures with variations including any jokers you have in your hand. NMJL rules states than an exposure can be changed only before the discard after a call for exposure. This is done by clicking on the first tile of the exposure after the call for exposure but before the discard. Only works if one can do another exposure.

Don't Take: If you don't want the discarded tile, simply click the "Don't Take" button.

Call for Mah Jongg: If you are ready to Mah Jongg, you must click the Call for Mah Jongg button to call Mah Jongg.

Drawing a Tile from the Wall

When you are able to draw a tile from the wall, there will be two buttons available: "Pick/Take Wall Tile" and "Discard Wall Tile"

Pick/Take Wall Tile: If you want the wall tile displayed, click this button. The tile will appear in your hand. A "Call for Mah Jongg" button will appear that you can click to call for Mah Jongg, or you must click a tile in your hand to discard.
Note: It is not your turn until you Pick/Take the Wall Tile into your hand.

Discard Wall Tile: If you do not want the wall tile displayed, click this button.

Note: As tiles are drawn from the wall, the wall will show one less tile and the number in the lower right corner of the wall will be decreased by one. You can monitor this number as needed.

Discards (Dead) Tiles

Dead tiles are shown in the area on the right of the game display. As a tile is discarded, a corner of a tile in the "dead" area is highlighted so players can see that tile is no longer available.

Joker Exchange

To do a joker exchange, it must be your turn. This means you must either pick the wall tile or call for an exposure first.
You must also have a tile in your concealed hand of the exposure that contains the joker to exchange.
Then click on the exposed joker (one of your exposures or another player's exposure) and the game will automatically exchange your tile for the joker.
You can do more than one exchange per turn.
Reminder: You must have a tile to exchange for an exposed joker to be able to do a joker exchange.
You cannot exchange a joker from your concealed hand for an exposed tile that you want.

Declaring Mah Jongg

You can declare Mah Jongg any time the "Call for Mah Jongg" button is available. Just be sure you have a valid Mah Jongg or your hand will be declared dead!

End of Game

A game ends when all of the wall tiles have been drawn or a player has successfully declared Mah Jongg. Players have the option of playing another game at that table or exiting the table. If one player exits the table, all of the other players are automatically exited.

Minutes/Secs Left

The "Minutes/secs left" display in the upper left corner of the game tells you how many minutes or seconds you have left to perform an action before you time out. The number of minutes allowed is dependent on the wait time chosen for the game. If you time out in the Charleston, you will receive a penalty of 150 pts and the game will end in a Wall game. If another player times out, they will get the penalty but you will get 50pts and the game will try to make that player dead.
The Official rules of the NMJL only have one mention of a time limit and this about the time needed to take a discard or not. This is about 5 seconds or less.
Mah Jongg is a game of skill and not speed. So the idea here is to try to not have a timeout and not hold up the other players as much as possible.

Declaring a hand dead

To declare another players hand dead, click on their name. The game will check if the hand is dead or not. If the hand is dead, it will go dead. If it is not dead, there will a penalty applied as per the rules of the NMJL. If your hand has been declared dead you can leave the game, but if you re-renter the room and that game is still in progress, you will automatically be reseated in that game and your hand will still be dead. You cannot start a new table or join another table until the game where you were declared dead has finished. Allowing another game to be started would not be fair to the other players.


Other Buttons in the Room

There are five buttons in the room:

Start Game

A game can be started with bots filling in for human players at any time by clicking the "Start with Bots" button in the lower right side of the screen. (Note: only the player who started the table will see the buttons for starting the game). For a game without bots, once all 4 seats are filled, the player who started the table can click the "Start Game" button to start the game.

Profile (alias, email, renewal)

Click the profile button to view basic information about your account. The profile contains your National Mah Jongg League Membership ID, NMJL Online Game Account ID, Alias, Email Address, and the date your NMJL Online subscription will expire. There are four buttons on this screen:

Change Alias: This button allows you to view how many times you have changed your alias for the current season. It also allows you to change your alias if you have not changed it 5 times for the season. To change your alias, type your new alias in the "New Alias" box and click the "Update" button. If you decide not to change your alias, click the "Cancel" button. Note: If you have already changed your alias 5 times during the current season, you will not be able to change it again until the next season.

Change Email: This button allows you to view and change the email address on your profile. Type your new email address in the "New Email Address" box and click the "Update" button. If you decide not to change the email address on your profile, click the "Cancel" button.

Renew Subscription: Click this button to transfer to the subscription renewal process.

Return to Room: Click this button to exit the profile screen and return to the room screen.

If you are unfamiliar with NMJL rules or some of the terminology used in NMJL Mah Jongg, click the "Tutorial and Mini Games" button. You will be transferred to the tutorial area with the following buttons:

Tile Identification Tutorial and Games: This tutorial and the 6 fun mini games within it help you learn about the Mah Jongg tiles used in the game. The tutorial explains each mini game and how to play it.

Hand Identification Tutorial and Games: This tutorial and the 6 fun mini games within it help you learn, recognize, and remember the hands for the current season. The tutorial explains each mini game and how to play it.

Rules: This tutorial explains the rules used in the NMJL Online game.

Strategy: This tutorial offers various strategies to consider while playing the NMJL Online game.

Glossary: Click this button to view a glossary of the terms used in National Mah Jongg League Mah Jong as well as the NMJL Online game. There is a "Back to Menu" button at the top of the glossary that will return you to the tutorial menu.

Back to Room: Click this button to return to the NMJL Online game room.

Mini Games

The NMJL Online game tutorials contain fun and educational mini games that help you learn about the Mah Jongg tiles used in the NMJL Online game and to help you learn the hands for the current season.

Tile Identification Mini Games: These mini games help you learn about the Mah Jongg tiles used in the game. The tutorial explains each mini game and how to play it.
Hand Identification Mini Games: These mini games help you learn learn, recognize, and remember the hands for the current season. The tutorial explains each mini game and how to play it.

Check Hand

Click this button for a screen that allows you to build a hand then check to see if it is a valid Mah Jongg. The screen will walk you through each step. While you are there, don't forget to click the "Edgar" bot button for some informative Maj trivia.


Lists

There are 4 helpful lists in the NMJL Online game room.

Waiting in Room

The "Waiting in Room" list displays the alias of each player who is the the room. There are a few things to note about this list:

Top 10 Scores

This list displays the players who currently have the highest scores. You can click the heading (Top 10 Scores) to refresh the list. NOTE: Only 4 player games are scored and your score is the SUM of the games played.

Show My Games

Click the "Show My Games" heading to access your game history. You have the following options to choose from:

4 Player Games: Click this button to see a list of the last 100 games you played without bots. These are the only games that are scored.

Robot Games: Click this button to see a list of the last 100 games you played with robots and least one other human player. These games are not scored.

Practice Games: Click this button to see a list of the last 100 games you played with robots only. These games are not scored.

Buddy List

This list displays the players you consider your "buddies". If that player is in the room, their name will be highlighted in yellow. Also, you can hover your cursor over a buddy name and their status will be displayed.
To add a player to the buddy list click on the player to add.
To remove a player from the buddy list, display the buddy list and click on player to remove.
